About Us
Voyager Counseling was born from a desire to bring hope and transformation to the lives of children, teens, and their families… and one well-timed conversation with a tiny human.
We were sitting on the playroom floor engaged in a very intense play session. One of my younger clients was orchestrating a grand adventure for some princesses, villains, and a wide assortment of sea creatures. There was treasure and treachery, puzzles to solve, and people to save. They were describing in great detail what would happen to each carefully placed figurine. Who would rescue whom and which bad guy committed which nefarious deed. The conversation went something like this:
Tiny human: “It’s one of those things that happens in a book or a movie!”
Me: “Oooh! You’re excited about that!”
Tiny human (trying to think of the perfect word): “Like an adventure… but longer… What’s it called… A voyage! And they are all going together! They are voyagers!”
Me: “You knew just the right word for that!”
Tiny human: “I did! And you know what? We are voyagers too – we’re doing this together!”
Me: “Oh! We are voyagers too! You’re really pleased you figured that out!”
At the time, I was pondering the idea of branching out on my own to be able to provide the level of quality care and customer service I knew was possible — and desperately needed — in the therapeutic community for our children and teens.
Some time later, when the tendrils of excitement that this dream might be able to become reality were turning into something far more tangible, I was mulling over what to name the practice. And this conversation came back to me – and with it – the idea that we cannot undertake this journey called life alone. That we need people to surround us, come alongside us, and sometimes carry use through. That we need never journey alone. Because it really is a grand journey – a Voyage if you will. And we are all Voyagers, traveling together through this adventure we call life.
I can’t wait to meet you, your family, your teens, and your tiny humans. To support you, grow alongside you, help carry you through the hardest of times, and equip you and yours to continue your Voyage together.
